Mabula’s community field guide programme gives people from the Bela-Bela area a route into guiding and hospitality.

Training combines field and people skills

Trainees learn nature guiding, guest interaction, conservation principles, vehicle operations and first aid. Classroom learning sits alongside practical experience in the reserve.

Seven people in the 2025 intake completed training and earned an NQF2 Nature Guide qualification before starting careers in conservation and hospitality.

Guiding is conservation communication

In 2025, 200 Spa Park Primary School learners joined an educational visit that included a guided safari and a ground-hornbill presentation.

That account shows how guiding can connect guests and local learners with conservation work. It calls for observation, preparation, safety awareness and the ability to explain complex ideas clearly. These are learnable skills, developed through training and supervised experience.

A practical first step

Local nature knowledge, communication and time spent observing outdoors make good foundations for someone considering guiding.
